ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 7 4/4

I took 11-2 quiz. It was about Mixed constructions which we choose the sentence that is clear enough to understand. The first example will make lots of sense. The name of the song is called "Words Unspoken. OR The song is called "Words Unspoken."  The answer shows us that the sentence is simple and clear to understand easily which means doesn’t need more explain. A trial conducted in England, which included both pre- and postmenopausal women, showed slightly different results OR In a trial conducted in England, which included both pre- and postmenopausal women, showed slightly different results. When we look at the black answer we see that in is unnecessarily in that sentence. I got one mistake which was  A séance is a gathering at which people try to contact the spirits of the dead OR A séance is when people gather to try to contact the spirits of the dead.  I chose the black one which is wrong because a definition should not begin with is when.

I took 10-2 quiz. It was about Needed words. It was too easy. It depend about language experience. I got 9 out of 10. The question was click on Omit if the underlined word or words can be omitted, and click on Needed if the underlined word or words are needed for grammar or logic, so we chose between need and omit Ex. “
Christopher had an attention span longer than that of the other students.” It is needed word because it is illogical to compare an attention span to students, the words that of are needed. “ The most extraordinary thing about the new drug is the number of ailments that it can cure.” That is unneeded word because Omitting the word that causes no problems in logic or meaning. The visitors were glad to see that Yellowstone National Park was recovering from the devastating forest fire. I got one of these questions wrong which was “The man whom we encountered at the airport turned out to be a long-lost friend.” I thought it is needed word, but it is unneeded because Omitting the word whom causes no confusion about logic or meaning.

ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 7 2/4

I took 22-3 quiz. It was not as easy as 21-3 quiz, but I got 10 out of 10. It was about Pronoun-antecedent agreement. The question was Click on the better sentence, the one that does not have any problem of pronoun-antecedent agreement. There is many questions which was some of them easy. An American family is likely to have at least two cars in their garage. American families are likely to have at least two cars in their garages. The black color is the right answer because Both the pronoun their and its antecedent, families, are plural. Americans seem to be in love with their cars OR Everyone in America seems to be in love with their cars. If we think about the fact the green example is the right one because it couldn’t be everyone. The gas crisis of the early 1970s made every American driver aware of the gas mileage on their vehicles OR The gas crisis of the early 1970s made all American drivers aware of the gas mileage on their vehicles. The black one is the right answer because Both the pronoun their and its antecedent, drivers, are plural.

ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 7 1/4

I took 21-3 quiz. It was too easy. It was about Subject-verb agreement. I got 10 out of 10. The questions was Click on the correct verb in the parentheses. There was many examples about subject-verb agreement such as “Before reaching college, nearly everyone already (knows / know) several facts about fables.” knows was the right answer because the subject, everyone, is third-person singular, so the -s form of the verb is required. Also there is another kind of question like “There (is / are) generally only two or three characters in an Aesop fable.” the answer of course are because the subject of the clause, characters, is plural, so the verb is are.. Also there is Ex. for present perfect which is “ Aesop, to whom most familiar fables in Western culture (has / have) been attributed, lived from 620 to 560 BCE.”  and  I knew that always with most we use have and the reason why because the sentence begins with the expletive there, the subject follows the verb.

ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 6 4/4

I took the 9-4 quiz. It was so easy. It was about Parallelism. The question was  In each pair, click on the better version of the passage, the one that does not contain errors in parallelism. This one is a little bit different because the sentence has an important word than the others such as The system has capabilities such as communicating with other computers, processing records, and performing mathematical functions, The system has capabilities such as communicating with other computers, processing records, and mathematical functions. I had one mistake which was  In combat, the soldiers were brave but sometimes foolish—because of poor training, lack of confidence, and not having experience, In combat, the soldiers were brave but sometimes foolish—because of poor training, lack of confidence, and inexperience, and I knew that the reason is The last element in the series should be a noun to make the three objects of because of parallel: poor training, lack of confidence, and inexperience.

I took the 9-3 quiz. It was so easy. It was about Parallelism. The question was In each pair, click on the better version of the passage, the one that does not contain errors in parallelism. Before working the exercise, read the example, which establishes context for the numbered items. At the beginning i was scary because i thought it is going to be difficult subject but when i took it was so easy, you will get the answer buy the context which also depend about your experience. There are some examples about the question like
In December 2004, a tsunami hit Sri Lanka and other countries in the Indian Ocean, killing more than 200,000 people and displacing more than a million OR In December 2004, a tsunami hit Sri Lanka and other countries in the Indian Ocean, killing more than 200,000 people and more than a million were displaced AND
A tsunami is usually caused by an earthquake along a fault line that either runs under the coastal land or beneath the ocean floor, A tsunami is usually caused by an earthquake along a fault line that runs either under the coastal land or beneath the ocean floor. We will realize from the examples that there is some unnecessary word in the sentence which is wrong.

ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 6 2/4

I took 8-4 quiz. It was not easy. It was about Active vs. be verbs. the question was  In each pair, click on the sentence that has an active verb, not a weak be verb. (Although not all uses of be verbs are weak, you can assume that the examples in this exercise illustrate weak uses of be, am, is, are, was, were, being, and been.) I had two mistakes the first one There were several agents at Council Travel who could speak Spanish OR Several agents at Council Travel could speak Spanish The There were construction is wordy and unemphatic. Several agents . . . could speak is more vigorous and less wordy. The second one The CEO is aware of the fact that morale in our division has plummeted OR The CEO knows that morale in our division has plummeted and Is aware of the fact is wordy and weak. Knows expresses the point more forcefully. I got some of them right like Sudden weight loss can indicate many serious health problems AND We intend to update the company's Web site by the end of the year.

ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 6 1/4

I took 8-2 quiz. It was super easy. It was about Identifying active and passive voice. It is too easy to know the difference between active and passive sentences. The passive sentence usually has By in the sentence and also in the past like Customer statements are sent out by the phone company on the last day of each month AND Diamond engagement rings were made popular in the 1940s by the De Beers diamond company, but sometimes you will see a passive sentence without buy like for safety, the walkway to Bonner Hall is swept every night. There is some example for the active sentence like To save the patient's life, the physician administered CPR AND
Amanda often dresses her fluffy lap dog in little pink clothes.
