My feeling about English 140 class. It is good class to take. At the beginning it was too difficult for me because it was totally different than my other classes. I felt really bad about this class. I thought that I am not going to pass it. The level will make you work as hard as you can. It has lots of work. I learned many things from E 140 class. I learned how to work hard and with team. I learned how to be a leader and how to be optimistic about everything. I would say for everyone is going to take this class. Don't give up never. It is going to be easier after it get harder. I think there is many things to improve E 140 class. The subjects should be related with the elder classes. The exams should be as same as the topic in smart curriculum. The student should be prepare for this class before the take it because it is not easy, but also show you the real class in the university how is going to looks like. In the university you will listen to the professor and write note which you will learn in E 140 class. You will make a research about something than you will make your out line and APA reference which also you will learn in E 140 class. Overall, I learn a lot of things from this class. I got many friends who are more than friends they are like my family. I really enjoyed taking this class and I will miss everything about it.

ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 9 4/4
I took 27-8 quiz. It was about Verb tense and mood. It was so easy because I am quit good with grammar tense. There are some ex. Before Kate was three years old, she knew that there (are / were) nine planets
in the solar system. The answer is the are choice because nine is plural and we use are with plural. I had two mistakes the first one is Our neighbor stood at the door looking so pale and ashen that we thought he
(just saw / had just seen) a ghost. I thought the answer is just saw because it is kind of familiar for my tongue, but I was wrong because the past perfect tense is required for an action already completed by the time
of another past action. The second mistake was Toni could be an excellent student if she (wasn't / weren't) so distracted by
problems at home. I chose wasn't because the pronoun she, but I forget that with the conductional we use were with she, he and it.
ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 9 3/4
I took 27-6 quiz. It was about something than I have never heard about, which was Standard English verb
forms. I learned new vocab which was misconceptions from this sentence" Many Americans have misconceptions about American Sign Language, also called
ASL. Until the 1960s, the use of sign language was (ban / banned) in most
American classrooms. " and the meaning is as same as misunderstanding, and the answer for this question is banned. A deaf child (was / were) expected to learn to lip-read to be more like a
hearing child. The answer was was. I noticed after the second ex that this quiz is testing your English skills and most of the question is going to be about past simple. Because of this ban, some deaf Americans were not able to learn any language
thoroughly when they (was / were) young. I chose were because of the pronoun they.
ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 9 2/4
27-4 was my second quiz for this week. I felt before I start that it is going to be easy but I was wrong. It was about Irregular verbs. Here is some examples for this quiz. How many times have you (swore / sworn) to yourself, "I'll diet tomorrow, after
one more piece of cheesecake"? I chose sworn because this question is present perfect which is have\ has + V3 and the verb is swear, swore and sworn. The tutor was satisfied that Max had (wrote / written) a fairly intelligent
essay. I also chose written because this sentence is using past perfect grammar which is had + V3 and the V3 for write is written. As I said I thought it is going to be easy quiz, but I was wrong because it wasn't just easy it was too easy for me. This quiz remind me about many perfect grammar that I almost forget it.
ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 9 1/4
26-3 was my first quiz for week 9. It was about Adjectives and adverbs. I know pretty much about this subject. I got 10 out of 10. There are some ex. Few city dwellers have a hard time deciding whether cockroaches or rats are
(worse / worst). The answer as I Minchin is worse because it's comparing only two items, yet we use the other choice when we compare with more than one like one student between 100. Most city rats are Norway rats; they came on ships from Europe, and their
numbers grew very (quick / quickly). I chose quickly because very is adjective in this sentence so quickly should be adverb. City rats, in contrast, have done quite (good / well) at adapting to urban
environments. I chose well because it is common adverb to use with sentence like this and It modifies the verb have done.

ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 8 4/4
I took 13-5 quiz. It was about Shifts: person and number. It was normal quiz not too hard. The first question was so easy ex. After the summer's drought had dried up the
water in the woods around our town, (we , you) began to see skunks
everywhere. I knew the answer is we because they said our town which the sentence after the comma must be we. If they said your them town the next sentence is going to start with they. I also learned new word which was skunks. It is a small black-and-white North American animal that produces a very strong and unpleasant smell when it is frightened or in danger. The questions were about skunks. I had a mistake which was misunderstanding for me. The question was When a skunk is desperate, they show little
fear, Or When a skunk is desperate, it shows little
fear. I chose the first one because I felt in my mind it is right, but I was wrong because The sentence shifts from the singular skunk to the plural they.
ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 8 3/4
I did 12-3 quiz. It was about Misplaced modifiers. It was hard quiz. I start my quiz with mistake. The mistake was "At our warehouse sale, cash, MasterCard, or Visa
will only be accepted. At
our warehouse sale, only cash, MasterCard, or Visa will be
accepted." I thought the first one is the right answer because only fit in it, but I was wrong and I knew that The limiting modifier only should
come just before the words it modifies: only cash, MasterCard, or Visa. I got the second one right, but I don't know what does anorexic or bulimic means in the sentence Not all thin people are anorexic or
bulimic. Overall, I think the quiz is more about understanding English language more than modifiers because I mention that the answers comes to my mind with out knowing the grammar.
ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 8 2/4
I took 25-2 quiz. It was about who and
whom. I knew from an experience that whom is more formal and we use it with question at the most and with writing like essay or journalism, but who is more casual we use it when we speak with someone also with texting with friends sometimes. The quiz was too easy. I had example for using whom with question like " In his first production of Hamlet, (who /whom) did Laurence Olivier
replace?" There is also an example for using who "Houdini's skills were so great that even those of us (who / whom) knew how he
performed his arts were often amazed." Overall whom is more formal than who. Who it uses with friend but whom with family or someone you respect more. We use who with speaking and sometimes with writing, but whom with writing and usually comes with question.
ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 8 1/4
I just finish 23-3 quiz. It was extremely hard for me. I didn’t understand it at all. It was about Pronoun reference. I just guessed most of the answers. Some of them was more accurate sentence than the other such as ”Modeling agencies tend to hire extremely thin models because clothing drapes well on thin bodies .In modeling agencies, they tend to hire extremely thin models because clothing drapes well on thin bodies. I think the start in the first sentence is better and the world in is not necessarily in the second one. I had some mistake in some part such as If her body is meant to be thin, a woman does not need to starve herself to keep it that way. If a woman's body is meant to be thin, she does not need to starve herself to keep it that way. My answer which is the black one was wrong. I knew that The pronoun she cannot refer to a possessive noun functioning as a modifier, in this case woman's.

ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 7 4/4
I took 11-2 quiz. It was about Mixed constructions which we choose the sentence that is clear enough to understand. The first example will make lots of sense. The name of the song is called "Words Unspoken. OR The song is called "Words Unspoken." The answer shows us that the sentence is simple and clear to understand easily which means doesn’t need more explain. A trial conducted in England, which included both pre- and postmenopausal women, showed slightly different results OR In a trial conducted in England, which included both pre- and postmenopausal women, showed slightly different results. When we look at the black answer we see that in is unnecessarily in that sentence. I got one mistake which was A séance is a gathering at which people try to contact the spirits of the dead OR A séance is when people gather to try to contact the spirits of the dead. I chose the black one which is wrong because a definition should not begin with is when.
ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 7 3/4
I took 10-2 quiz. It was about Needed words. It was too easy. It depend about language experience. I got 9 out of 10. The question was click on Omit if the underlined word or words can be omitted, and click on Needed if the underlined word or words are needed for grammar or logic, so we chose between need and omit Ex. “
Christopher had an attention span longer than that of the other students.” It is needed word because it is illogical to compare an attention span to students, the words that of are needed. “ The most extraordinary thing about the new drug is the number of ailments that it can cure.” That is unneeded word because Omitting the word that causes no problems in logic or meaning. The visitors were glad to see that Yellowstone National Park was recovering from the devastating forest fire. I got one of these questions wrong which was “The man whom we encountered at the airport turned out to be a long-lost friend.” I thought it is needed word, but it is unneeded because Omitting the word whom causes no confusion about logic or meaning. ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 7 2/4
I took 22-3 quiz. It was not as easy as 21-3 quiz, but I got 10 out of 10. It was about Pronoun-antecedent agreement. The question was Click on the better sentence, the one that does not have any problem of pronoun-antecedent agreement. There is many questions which was some of them easy. An American family is likely to have at least two cars in their garage. American families are likely to have at least two cars in their garages. The black color is the right answer because Both the pronoun their and its antecedent, families, are plural. Americans seem to be in love with their cars OR Everyone in America seems to be in love with their cars. If we think about the fact the green example is the right one because it couldn’t be everyone. The gas crisis of the early 1970s made every American driver aware of the gas mileage on their vehicles OR The gas crisis of the early 1970s made all American drivers aware of the gas mileage on their vehicles. The black one is the right answer because Both the pronoun their and its antecedent, drivers, are plural.
ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 7 1/4
I took 21-3 quiz. It was too easy. It was about Subject-verb agreement. I got 10 out of 10. The questions was Click on the correct verb in the parentheses. There was many examples about subject-verb agreement such as “Before reaching college, nearly everyone already (knows / know) several facts about fables.” knows was the right answer because the subject, everyone, is third-person singular, so the -s form of the verb is required. Also there is another kind of question like “There (is / are) generally only two or three characters in an Aesop fable.” the answer of course are because the subject of the clause, characters, is plural, so the verb is are.. Also there is Ex. for present perfect which is “ Aesop, to whom most familiar fables in Western culture (has / have) been attributed, lived from 620 to 560 BCE.” and I knew that always with most we use have and the reason why because the sentence begins with the expletive there, the subject follows the verb.

ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 6 4/4
I took the 9-4 quiz. It was so easy. It was about Parallelism. The question was In each pair, click on the better version of the passage, the one that does not contain errors in parallelism. This one is a little bit different because the sentence has an important word than the others such as The system has capabilities such as communicating with other computers, processing records, and performing mathematical functions, The system has capabilities such as communicating with other computers, processing records, and mathematical functions. I had one mistake which was In combat, the soldiers were brave but sometimes foolish—because of poor training, lack of confidence, and not having experience, In combat, the soldiers were brave but sometimes foolish—because of poor training, lack of confidence, and inexperience, and I knew that the reason is The last element in the series should be a noun to make the three objects of because of parallel: poor training, lack of confidence, and inexperience.
ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 6 3/4
I took the 9-3 quiz. It was so easy. It was about Parallelism. The question was In each pair, click on the better version of the passage, the one that does not contain errors in parallelism. Before working the exercise, read the example, which establishes context for the numbered items. At the beginning i was scary because i thought it is going to be difficult subject but when i took it was so easy, you will get the answer buy the context which also depend about your experience. There are some examples about the question like
In December 2004, a tsunami hit Sri Lanka and other countries in the Indian Ocean, killing more than 200,000 people and displacing more than a million OR In December 2004, a tsunami hit Sri Lanka and other countries in the Indian Ocean, killing more than 200,000 people and more than a million were displaced AND
A tsunami is usually caused by an earthquake along a fault line that either runs under the coastal land or beneath the ocean floor, A tsunami is usually caused by an earthquake along a fault line that runs either under the coastal land or beneath the ocean floor. We will realize from the examples that there is some unnecessary word in the sentence which is wrong.ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 6 2/4
I took 8-4 quiz. It was not easy. It was about Active vs. be verbs. the question was In each pair, click on the sentence that has an active verb, not a weak be verb. (Although not all uses of be verbs are weak, you can assume that the examples in this exercise illustrate weak uses of be, am, is, are, was, were, being, and been.) I had two mistakes the first one There were several agents at Council Travel who could speak Spanish OR Several agents at Council Travel could speak Spanish The There were construction is wordy and unemphatic. Several agents . . . could speak is more vigorous and less wordy. The second one The CEO is aware of the fact that morale in our division has plummeted OR The CEO knows that morale in our division has plummeted and Is aware of the fact is wordy and weak. Knows expresses the point more forcefully. I got some of them right like Sudden weight loss can indicate many serious health problems AND We intend to update the company's Web site by the end of the year.
ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 6 1/4
I took 8-2 quiz. It was super easy. It was about Identifying active and passive voice. It is too easy to know the difference between active and passive sentences. The passive sentence usually has By in the sentence and also in the past like Customer statements are sent out by the phone company on the last day of each month AND Diamond engagement rings were made popular in the 1940s by the De Beers diamond company, but sometimes you will see a passive sentence without buy like for safety, the walkway to Bonner Hall is swept every night. There is some example for the active sentence like To save the patient's life, the physician administered CPR AND
Amanda often dresses her fluffy lap dog in little pink clothes.

ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 5 4/4
I took 64-2 quiz. It was hard for me. It was about Sentence types which are simple, compound, complex, or compound-complex. I learned that the simple sentence consists of one independent clause, compound sentence It consists of two independent clauses joined with a comma and the coordinating conjunction, complex sentence consists of an independent clause and a subordinate clause, and compound-complex sentence consists of two independent clauses joined with a comma and the coordinating conjunction. I had many mistakes like When I applied to college, I had a part-time job, but now I have no source of income, He caught the ball and stepped on second base for a double play and Take two pills every six hours, and call the doctor in three days.
ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 5 3/4
I took 45-2 quiz. It was piece of cake. It was about Capital letters which almost everyone know when we capitalize the word. the question was multiple choice as usual. I took 9 out of 10 because I had a mistake which was "O Liberty," cried Madame Roland from the scaffold, "what crimes are committed in thy name?" OR"O Liberty," cried Madame Roland from the scaffold, "What crimes are committed in thy name?"
I chose the one that had the capital letter but I was wrong I learned that The word What is not the first word of the quoted sentence, so it should not be capitalized. We use capital letter when we use name Ex. My mother has begun to research the history of her Cherokee ancestors in Georgia. We also use capital letter for a title or website name Ex. I obtained profiles of both candidates from a useful Website called Vote Smart Web. We don’t use capital letter when we talk about subject such as biology, unless we talk about language like English or Arabic Ex. I want to take Environmental Biology 103, one other biology course, and one English course.
ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 5 2/4
I took 44-2 quiz. It was about The hyphen. It was difficult. I got full mark because I was lucky, but i didn’t understand anything. They wanted us to choose the right sentence between two sentences. The first one was Officer Boomer was knocked to the ground by the recoil. His still smoking gun went spinning down the alley or Officer Boomer was knocked to the ground by the recoil. His still-smoking gun went spinning down the alley. Because a hyphen should be used to connect two words functioning together as an adjective before a noun. The second one was We were embarrassed when our uncle bragged about being a self made millionaire or We were embarrassed when our uncle bragged about being a self-made millionaire. Because a hyphen should be used with the prefix self-. The third was Over the years, several well known politicians have taught part time at George Washington University or Over the years, several well-known politicians have taught part time at George Washington University. I knew that well-known always should be with -. The fourth was The quietly purring cat cleaned first one paw and then the other before curling up under the stove or The quietly-purring cat cleaned first one paw and then the other before curling up under the stove.
ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 5 1/4
I took 31-2 quiz. It was super easy. It was about Prepositions showing time and place. The question was about choosing the correct prepositions on, in and at. I knew that we use in when we talk about something you can enter inside like a car or something you put it inside like the mailbox Ex. We spent seven days (at / on / in) June on the beach, and it rained every day. I also knew that we use on if we talk about day or something you can stand or set like the bus or table Ex. Yuri arrived in the United States (at / on / in) a Wednesday in June, Only the adults in the family were allowed to sit (at / on / in) the dining room table; the children ate in another room. We use at when we talk about time or place sometimes like at the school Ex. Sylvia met us for breakfast (at / on / in) 9 o'clock on the morning of her wedding. I had a mistake which was The kittens were sleeping (at / on / in) a wicker basket in the basement. I thought on because we sleep in the bed but the right answer is in because before a noun indicating an enclosed space is in.

ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 4 4/4
I took 63-11 quiz. It was about Subjects of subordinate clauses. So they gave us a sentence and they want as to write the answer. The first one was “ Some foods that are high in fat are also high in nutritional value” and i chose the right answer which was that. I thought the quiz is so simple. I moved to next one and it was “Give what you can.” I answered it wrongly. The answer was you. And i said the third one i will get it right, but I also get wrong. It was “The only fair thing [that] I could do was withdraw from the competition.” The fourth and fifth one also wrong. I read the question more carefully again and I realized that they want us to find the subject. I looked at the the sentence closely which was “ The worst thing about winter is that the snow can't shovel itself.” and i wrote The snow. It was right answer. I was happy. The next one which was “ I've never met a child who was incapable of learning.” I wrote who and also was right one. At the end I knew that the quiz was really easy, but I didn’t read the question correctly at the beginning.
ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 4 3/4
I took 63-5. It was unbelievable. I didn't understand what do they want from the questions. It was about Prepositional phrases. They wanted us to choose between Adjective or Adverb. I had lots of mistake. some of my mistake was” Charlotte was elected president of the class.” I choose Adverb but I was wrong, the write answer was adjective because Of the class functions as an adjective modifying the noun president. Which president? The president of the class. The other mistake was “ My cousin was mistakenly named an enemy of the state. I choose also Adverb but the right answer was Adjective because Of the state functions as an adjective modifying the noun enemy. What kind of enemy? An enemy of the state. I get some of them right like “ A latte is an espresso with steamed milk.” I choose Adjective and it was right because With steamed milk modifies the noun espresso. What kind of espresso? Espresso with steamed milk. Also this one,” I walked home without any shoes.” and i choose adverb because Correct. Without any shoes modifies the verb walked. How did I walk? Without any shoes.

ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 4 2/4
I took 40-2 quiz. It was about Abbreviations. It wasn’t too hard. The questions was a multiple guess. I learned that if we have a date and BC, The abbreviation BC follows the date Ex. Julius Caesar was born in 100 BC or Julius Caesar was born in BC 100 and the pink one is the correct one. I also learned that If we have AD and date, The abbreviation AD should precede the date Ex. The first discovery of America was definitely not in 1492 AD OR The first discovery of America was definitely not in AD 1492 and the pink one is the correct one. I knew that the Abbreviations are not used for titles without a proper name Ex. My sociology professor spends most of his lecture time talking about political science OR My soc. prof. spends most of his lecture time talking about political science and the pink one is the correct one.
ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 4 1/4
I took 30-5 quiz. It wasn’t too hard. It was about Omissions and repetitions. The questions were about choosing the correct grammar usage. Like when they give us two sentence and they use pronoun twice and that's mistake Ex. Henri and Nicole they are good friends, or Henri and Nicole are good friends. and the right answer is the pink one because the subject Henri and Nicole is not repeated by a pronoun in the same clause. Other Ex. Small shops in Key West sell the most unusual merchandise or Small shops in Key West they sell the most unusual merchandise and the right answer is the pink one because they mention about the pronoun before and it doesn’t need to repeat again. I had one mistake which was Recently there have been many changes in world politics that anyone can read about them in the newspaper or Recently there have been many changes in world politics that anyone can read about in the newspaper. I choose the black one, but the pink one is the correct one because the relative pronoun that should not be repeated by the pronoun them later in the same clause.

ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 3 4/4
I took 62-7 quiz. It was about Indirect objects and object complements. I don’t know this grammar. It wasn’t clear for me. I had lots of mistakes like “Improper storage can make the best wine undrinkable.” and they want me to chose between Indirect object/direct object or Direct object/object complement. I choose the wrong one. I noticed that If the sentence is clear ,has linking verb or related to you it might properly direct object/object complement like “Doing crossword puzzles keeps your mind sharp, but if the sentence is clear and doesn’t related to you, It might be Indirect object/object complement. I also took 62-9 quiz. It was a little bit clearer than the others. It was talking about Linking, transitive, and intransitive verbs. I knew that inking (followed by a subject complement), transitive (followed by a direct object), or intransitive (followed by an adverb, an adverb phrase, or nothing at all). I answered most of the question right. The example for linking verb is “ Professor Flanagan is never late.” The example for transitive verb is “A person with a phobia has an irrational fear of something.“ . Also for intransitive is “ Forgetting to kiss us good-bye, Alexis ran to the train's platform.“
