ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 5 4/4

I took 64-2 quiz. It was hard for me. It was about Sentence types which are  simple, compound, complex, or compound-complex. I learned that the simple sentence consists of one independent clause, compound sentence It consists of two independent clauses joined with a comma and the coordinating conjunction, complex sentence consists of an independent clause and a subordinate clause, and compound-complex sentence consists of two independent clauses joined with a comma and the coordinating conjunction. I had many mistakes like When I applied to college, I had a part-time job, but now I have no source of income, He caught the ball and stepped on second base for a double play and Take two pills every six hours, and call the doctor in three days.

ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 5 3/4

I took 45-2 quiz. It was piece of cake. It was about Capital letters which almost everyone know when we capitalize the word. the question was multiple choice as usual. I took 9 out of 10 because I had a mistake which was "O Liberty," cried Madame Roland from the scaffold, "what crimes are committed in thy name?" OR"O Liberty," cried Madame Roland from the scaffold, "What crimes are committed in thy name?"
I chose the one that had the capital letter but I was wrong I learned that The word What is not the first word of the quoted sentence, so it should not be capitalized. We use capital letter when we use name Ex. My mother has begun to research the history of her Cherokee ancestors in Georgia. We also use capital letter for a title or website name Ex. I obtained profiles of both candidates from a useful Website called Vote Smart Web. We don’t use capital letter when we talk about subject such as biology, unless we talk about language like English or Arabic Ex. I want to take Environmental Biology 103, one other biology course, and one English course.

ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 5 2/4

I took 44-2 quiz. It was about The hyphen. It was difficult. I got full mark because I was lucky, but i didn’t understand anything. They wanted us to choose the right sentence between two sentences. The first one was Officer Boomer was knocked to the ground by the recoil. His still smoking gun went spinning down the alley or Officer Boomer was knocked to the ground by the recoil. His still-smoking gun went spinning down the alley. Because a hyphen should be used to connect two words functioning together as an adjective before a noun. The second one was We were embarrassed when our uncle bragged about being a self made millionaire or We were embarrassed when our uncle bragged about being a self-made millionaire. Because a hyphen should be used with the prefix self-. The third was Over the years, several well known politicians have taught part time at George Washington University or Over the years, several well-known politicians have taught part time at George Washington University. I knew that well-known always should be with -. The fourth was  The quietly purring cat cleaned first one paw and then the other before curling up under the stove or The quietly-purring cat cleaned first one paw and then the other before curling up under the stove.

ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 5 1/4

I took 31-2 quiz. It was super easy. It was about Prepositions showing time and place. The question was about choosing the correct prepositions on, in and at. I knew that we use in when we talk about something you can enter inside like a car or something you put it inside like the mailbox Ex. We spent seven days (at / on / in) June on the beach, and it rained every day. I also knew that we use on if we talk about day or something you can stand or set like the bus or table Ex. Yuri arrived in the United States (at / on / in) a Wednesday in June, Only the adults in the family were allowed to sit (at / on / in) the dining room table; the children ate in another room. We use at when we talk about time or place sometimes like at the school Ex. Sylvia met us for breakfast (at / on / in) 9 o'clock on the morning of her wedding. I had a mistake which was The kittens were sleeping (at / on / in) a wicker basket in the basement. I thought on because we sleep in the bed but the right answer is in because  before a noun indicating an enclosed space is in.

ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 4 4/4

I took 63-11 quiz. It was about Subjects of subordinate clauses. So they gave us a sentence and they want as to write the answer. The first one was “ Some foods that are high in fat are also high in nutritional value” and i chose the right answer which was that. I thought the quiz is so simple. I moved to next one and it was “Give what you can.” I answered it wrongly. The answer was you. And i said the third one i will get it right, but I also get wrong. It was “The only fair thing [that] I could do was withdraw from the competition.” The fourth and fifth one also wrong. I read the question more carefully again and I realized that they want us to find the subject. I looked at the the sentence closely which was The worst thing about winter is that the snow can't shovel itself.”  and i wrote The snow. It was right answer. I was happy. The next one which was “ I've never met a child who was incapable of learning.”  I wrote who and also was right one. At the end I knew that the quiz was really easy, but I didn’t read the question correctly at the beginning.

ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 4 3/4

I took 63-5. It was unbelievable. I didn't understand what do they want from the questions. It was about  Prepositional phrases. They wanted us to choose between Adjective or Adverb. I had lots of mistake. some of my mistake was”  Charlotte was elected president of the class.” I choose Adverb but I was wrong, the write answer was adjective because Of the class functions as an adjective modifying the noun president. Which president? The president of the class. The other mistake was “ My cousin was mistakenly named an enemy of the state. I choose also Adverb but the right answer was Adjective because Of the state functions as an adjective modifying the noun enemy. What kind of enemy? An enemy of the state. I get some of them right like “ A latte is an espresso with steamed milk.” I choose Adjective and it was right because With steamed milk modifies the noun espresso. What kind of espresso? Espresso with steamed milk. Also this one,” I walked home without any shoes.” and i choose adverb because Correct. Without any shoes modifies the verb walked. How did I walk? Without any shoes.

ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 4 2/4

I took 40-2 quiz. It was about Abbreviations. It wasn’t too hard. The questions was a multiple guess. I learned that if we have a date and BC, The abbreviation BC follows the date Ex. Julius Caesar was born in 100 BC or Julius Caesar was born in BC 100 and the pink one is the correct one. I also learned that If we have AD and date, The abbreviation AD should precede the date Ex. The first discovery of America was definitely not in 1492 AD OR The first discovery of America was definitely not in AD 1492 and the pink one is the correct one. I knew that the Abbreviations are not used for titles without a proper name Ex. My sociology professor spends most of his lecture time talking about political science OR My soc. prof. spends most of his lecture time talking about political science and the pink one is the correct one.

ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 4 1/4

I took 30-5 quiz. It wasn’t too hard. It was about Omissions and repetitions. The questions were about choosing the correct grammar usage. Like when they give us two sentence and they use pronoun twice and that's mistake Ex. Henri and Nicole they are good friends, or Henri and Nicole are good friends. and the right answer is the pink one because the subject Henri and Nicole is not repeated by a pronoun in the same clause. Other Ex. Small shops in Key West sell the most unusual merchandise or Small shops in Key West they sell the most unusual merchandise and the right answer is the pink one because they mention about the pronoun before and it doesn’t need to repeat again. I had one mistake which was Recently there have been many changes in world politics that anyone can read about them in the newspaper or Recently there have been many changes in world politics that anyone can read about in the newspaper. I choose the black one, but the pink one is the correct one because the relative pronoun that should not be repeated by the pronoun them later in the same clause.

ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 3 4/4

I took 62-7 quiz. It was about Indirect objects and object complements. I don’t know this grammar. It wasn’t clear for me. I had lots of mistakes like “Improper storage can make the best wine undrinkable.” and they want me to chose between Indirect object/direct object or Direct object/object complement. I choose the wrong one. I noticed that If the sentence is clear ,has linking verb or related to you it might properly direct object/object complement like “Doing crossword puzzles keeps your mind sharp, but if the sentence is clear and doesn’t related to you, It might be Indirect object/object complement. I also took 62-9 quiz. It was a little bit clearer than the others. It was talking about Linking, transitive, and intransitive verbs. I knew that inking (followed by a subject complement), transitive (followed by a direct object), or intransitive (followed by an adverb, an adverb phrase, or nothing at all). I answered most of the question right. The example for linking verb is “ Professor Flanagan is never late.” The example for transitive verb is “A person with a phobia has an irrational fear of something.“ . Also for intransitive is “ Forgetting to kiss us good-bye, Alexis ran to the train's platform.

ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 3 3/4

I took 62-4 quiz. It was about Subjects. It was so difficult to understand the question. The question was “ In the night sky, you can see images of mythological gods, heroes, and animals?” I had a mistakes and one of them was “ In the night sky, you can see images of mythological gods, heroes, and animals.” I thought the answer is sky because the subject usually in the beginning of the sentence, but I was wrong and the right answer is You because sky cannot be the subject because it is the object of the preposition In. (Do not assume that the first noun or pronoun in a sentence is always the subject.) I had also another question which was right “Half of our savings were depleted in the 2008 stock market crash.” and the answer was Half like what i thought.

ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 3 2/4

I took 36-3 quiz. It was about apostrophes. It was the most difficult quiz I have ever taken. I got most of my answers by luck. I noticed that I can guess the answers by the context, or my eyes used to notice that like “After a tutoring program was instituted at City College, our chemistry (student's / students') test scores rose dramatically.”, in that’s sentence you will see student's is the better choice, but I knew that the reason is The apostrophe should follow the plural noun students. Some of my mistakes was “
Booties were placed on the sled (dog's / dogs') feet to protect them from sharp rocks and ice. [More than one dog],” and the answer is dogs because the apostrophe should follow the plural noun dogs. I also took 37-3 quiz. It was about Quotation marks. It was much better than apostrophes. I knew that I didn’t got a better score, but at least I knew something's. The question was mostly about the punctuations like “ My commanding officer said, "If we wanted you to have children, we would have issued them to you." The period is inside the final quotation mark and Stephen Leacock once said, "I am a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it." A comma is used following said to introduce a quotation.

ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 3 1/4

I took 29-3 quiz. It was about Using articles. It was easy except some parts which I had mistake on. The most questions was like this “ Some of the best wine in the world comes from (a / an / the) Rhine River valley in southwestern Germany.” and the answer is The because the article the is used for large geographical regions (such as Rhine River valley). I also had two mistakes with “ (A / An / The) courage is an admirable characteristic.” and I thought the answer is The, but it was wrong and No article was the right answer because no article is used with a noncount noun representing a concept, such as courage. Also the other mistake was “When I was at the park yesterday, I saw a dog playing with (a / an / the) ball.”  and the right answer is a because the article a should be used before the count noun ball, which is being mentioned for the first time.

ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 2 4/4

I took today the 61-11 quiz. It was taking about parts of speech: adjectives. It was good. There was many examples about finding the adjective in the sentence like: Infomercials are rarely believable and the answer is believable. I had two mistakes. The first one is A penguin cannot fly; it uses its wings to swim underwater. I thought the answer is fly but I was wrong and the answer is its, because Its is a possessive pronoun functioning as an adjective modifying the noun wings. The second mistake was His car squealed loudly whenever he turned sharply to the left and I thought loudly but the right answer is his. 61-13 was a little bit difficult. It was about adverbs and most of the questions was easy like Clean water is very scarce in some parts of the world and the answer is very, because Very is an adverb; it modifies the adjective scarce. I had two mistakes the first one was Most babies get their lower front teeth first. I thought most but the answer was first, because the adverb is first; it modifies the verb get. Most is an adjective modifying the noun babies. The other mistake which I haven' understand it yet was strange. Despite the threatening clouds, we were not allowed to bring our umbrellas into the stadium and the answer not and I don't know why.

ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 2 3/4

I took 35-2 quiz. It was pretty difficult. It was testing about the colon, the semicolon, and the comma. I learned one uses for colon. A colon should be used after an independent clause to direct attention to a list like On July 10, send shipments of chocolate to our distributors in the following cities: Albany, New Haven, Burlington, and Boston. The easiest quiz I have ever taken was 61-5. It was too easy. It talks about parts of speech: nouns. The question was about finding the noun in the sentence like the ancient Mayans were the first people to use a symbol for zero and the noun between ancient, people, for is people. 61-7 was about parts of speech: pronouns. It was extremely easy for me. The questions was about finding the pronoun in the sentence like you can cut down on stress by not worrying about minor problems and the choices are you, on or not and the answer is you. Verbs are really important in the sentence. 61-9 was taking about verbs. The example is choosing between these sentences William was often called "Billy" as a child or William was often called "Billy" as a child. The first one is the correct one because often is not verb.

ENGL140 -ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 2 2/4

I took 32-9 quiz. It was about major uses of the comma. It was difficult for me because I don't know when we use comma and when we don't. I knew that we use comma when we have non defining adjective but also it is depending about my opinion If I see the information is important or not. I had one sentence that drove me crazy in the quiz. Locally owned businesses have led to safer, more prosperous neighborhoods. They put comma before more and I don't know why. I learned another mistake when I had this Because most banks consider low-income people to be bad credit risks, hopeful entrepreneurs often have difficulty securing loans, and the reason that we put comma because the comma is needed after an introductory subordinate clause. The 34-3 was talking about the semicolon and the comma which I have never studied it before, but It was super easy for me. I noticed that when we have a sentence like question we use semicolon for example: Don't talk about yourself ( , / ; ) it will be done when you leave and I do not rule Russia ( , / ; ) ten thousand clerks do. In those two sentences we put semicolon in each of them because it was like a question and the second part like the answer.

ENGL140 - ALNASHMI, Abdulraouf - Week 2 1/4

I took the quiz which was 28-5. It was so easy, but I got confused in some parts about the vocabulary that I don't know about the meaning or I forget the meaning like weary and the different between spend / spent. The grammar was easy. It was about present continuous, past perfect, present perfect and present simple in some parts. I took 28-6 quiz. It was pretty easy but it is not as easy as 28-5 because there was some question that made me confused. It was taking about when can we put to and when we can't. I had a mistake in this quotation Newborns whether human or animal can often sensed when their mother is near. I knew that we can use the modal verb such with base from of the verb sense. I also learned a new word which was knit. I took 28-7 it was difficult for me to remember the Conditional sentences grammar. I had some difficult questions but I hardly get full point. I review that with present simple we use will but with past simple we use would. Also we use were instead off was in the Conditional sentences. The 28-8 quiz was strange because I noticed that I know what is the wrong answer with out knowing the grammar. I think it is clear from the context.  I had one mistake which was: my father helped me (complete / completing) my tax return. I think they should put to after me, that is way I got it wrong.
